Fashion fades, only style remains the same. – Coco Chanel

My maternal aunt was a fashionista in the best sense – she wore what suited her regardless of the trends. She had a penchant for couture clothes and became a great fan of the I. Magnin & Company label when she lived in San Francisco beginning in the late 1950s. Being an accomplished seamstress, she often copied the store’s designer gowns right down to the smallest details of construction, fastening, and underskirting.

She never received guests or left the house without being perfectly attired, coiffed, and made-up. Consequently, all the photographs of her portray a beautifully turned out woman – even as an octogenarian.

I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people . – Temple inscription from Isaiah 43:20

Architect William Merchant designed this Beaux Arts temple in the 1930s with a classical circle of corinthian columns and an ornate masonry ring. It is located in Woodside, California at the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct’s terminus. A reflecting pool lies beyond the temple.

The setting is reminiscent of those depicted in high romance novels  – the  hero and heroine’s secret meeting place.

The Gooderham, or Flatiron, Building at Front and Wellington Streets, was built by George Gooderham in in 1891, predating New York’s more famous Flatiron building by 10 years. [lostrivers.ca]

In my opinion, this is the most beautiful building in Toronto! I shot this photograph with a Konica C35 many years ago and self developed it on matte paper.

Veneration of the Cross is a ceremony, usually on Good Friday, where congregants pay respect to the cross on which Christ was crucified.

The red of the tulips and berries in this floral arrangement was the same color as the fabric draped on the cross at the Veneration ceremony today.

I want a love like my bed. Someone to support me, someone comfortable, someone who will listen to everything I say, and will be there to catch all my tears. Essentially, a bed is the greatest model of an idealistic love there is.  [colt10]

I want a love like my Eiderdown comforter – warm and cuddly.

Practical ends are achieved through the application of scientific principles.

When I asked an engineer how his remote control worked, just before Masterpiece Theatre last evening, all I wanted to know was how to turn the device on. His eyes lit up when he sensed that what I really wanted to know was every excruciating detail about the principles of operation – mechanical, electrical, and infrared.

Feigning interest, I made the mistake of nodding my head and this he took as a go ahead for a further in depth discussion about material science – plastics and metals strength, fatigue factors, and wear characteristics. To really drive home his points, he decided to disassemble the remote control to expose and speak to the major components of each subsystem contained therein.

As he addressed assembly time, I asked if perhaps he could show me the series of steps necessary to put the device back together so that I might watch my show. Unfortunately, he detected an opportunity to improve on the design of one of the many pieces now arranged in a geometric grid on the coffee table before us and disappeared into his workroom to obtain just the right tool for the job.

I never did find out how the remote control worked but did learn wherein his passions lay.

The color palette of this romantic sideboard laden with decorative cakes and sweets for a garden party reminds me of the sumptuous sets in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film, Marie Antoinette.
