This morning, I passed this crab washed ashore along with tangles of kelp.

Barbara Walter's interview, California Pepper tree, Katharine Hepburn, postaweek 2011

Everybody would like to be an oak tree, that’s very strong and very pretty.
Katharine Hepburn

Early this morning, when I was inspecting the jumble of leaves and pink peppercorns that the California Pepper tree had deposited on the roof and in the gutters of my new home, I thought of Katharine Hepburn’s statement that she would like to be a great oak tree.

After having lived in New England for fifteen years and spent a good part of every fall raking and bagging thousands of leaves from white and red oak trees, I would not wish to be a tree that was so burdensome – no matter how beautiful. I think Johnny Carson was on the right track when he said he wanted to be a tumbleweed.

I’m not trying to overcome my father or fill his shoes or reach any kind of level that he did. We’re talking about a Mozart of rock music. – Sean Lennon

My father’s shoes are too big for me, as well.

It is a peculiarity of knitters that they chronically underestimate the amount of time it takes to knit something. – Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

Although I am not planning to give up my present love (Rowan yarn), I have to confess that I am smitten with two others: Ozark Handspun and Be Sweet yarns. I plan to use all three when making Christmas gifts this year for my daughters.

British royalty fans will want to check out the July 20th posting of the Be Sweet Blog and the instructions for the shawl that Kate Middleton wore recently.

Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Remember me to one who lives there,
He once was a true love of mine.
by Simon and Garfunkel

I found myself singing Scarborough Fair as I readied my pots for an indoor herb garden.
Hayley Westenra’s version of the song is much more compelling.

Sliding a wave removes our brains out of the ordinary and slips us into the extra ordinary of being there now. No more worries about mortgages or strife of being poor or rich. When you enter the domain of an ocean cylinder, that moment, those split seconds belong to the Zen part of just being. Period.
Bill Hamilton

I passed a beginning surfing class and thought maybe it was time for me to take up surfing when the waves were small…
