Farewell

Say, can we know
That we’re to be put out
Of long established house and home and hearth,
Uprooted like a tree and thrown into
A stream of life as so much flotsam is?

If fate decrees
Then with some poise and pride
We should elect the when and how and where
Of place and time and method used to leave,
Thus not become an object to deride.
