The stars try to imitate the glitter in your eyes
But fail helplessly and cry for your sight
To pacify my heart which pounds and weep
To see you till its last beat.
from The Glitter in Your Eyes – C. N. Premkumar

This Valentine’s Day take a moment to behold your lover’s beautiful eyes.

I think you may be a kindred spirit after all.  – Anne of Green Gables

I am a huge Lucy Maud Montgomery fan! Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe of the Anne of Green Gables series were my favorite fictional characters as a child, as they were for most Canadian girls. (And, thanks to director and producer Kevin Sullivan, they are for my daughters’ generation, as well. )

It was Anne Shirley who filled my head with the notion of how wonderful it would be for your kindred spirit and your love interest to be one and the same.

No man can be ideally successful until he has found his place. Like a locomotive he is strong on the track, but weak anywhere else. – Orison Swett Mardone

I love to travel by train! My favorite train ride was during the summer after grade ten when I traveled with my best girlfriend from Calgary to Vancouver through the Canadian Rockies. We both fell hopelessly in love with a handsome university student who boarded the train in Revelstoke and spent more time looking at him than the glorious scenery all around us.

I passed along the way
Well. I got down on my knees

I stopped into a chapel and photographed this charming stained glass window located directly behind the altar (detail shown above).

I have found men who didn’t know how to kiss. I have always found time to teach them. – Mae West

The kids in my old neighborhood were mad about kissing! I am not sure whether this was due to a proximity to the 49th parallel, a noxious substance in the drinking water, or an abnormally high level of red dye in our bloodstreams from ingesting copious amounts of Jello, lollipops, and popsicles. Whatever the reason, nearly every game that we played, from flag to tag to hide-and-seek, had some kissing component connected with it.

The boy next door, two years older than I, was the dreamiest boy on the planet. He attracted not only girls but also boys to play in his backyard. It was he who conceived and organized all the games with a complicated set of regulations that always ruled in his favor and gave him the license to kiss any and every girl he pleased.

I would like to report that my heart throb neighbor was the one who had planted the first kiss on my lips. He had so much practice, that I am sure he had perfected the art of kissing to a “T.” Unfortunately, one of his protégées tackled me in a round of tag and pressed his lips against mine before I could resist. Since then, every time I see a slimy earthworm lying on the sidewalk after a rain, I am reminded of that first kiss.

Brevity is the soul of lingerie. – Dorothy Parker

This sizzling satin and lace slip from Rio de Janeiro heats up a romantic evening!

My fascination with the full slip dates back to a time when I watched old movies with my mother – particularly BUtterfield 8 starring bad girl, Elizabeth Taylor. Pillow Talk with Doris Day, and Niagara with Marilyn Monroe.

As in the movie, High Fidelity, it can be very tricky coming up with just the right playlist to set the stage for L-O-V-E on Valentine’s Day. My list (a work in progress) is somewhat ecclectic, but I hope it will set the mood just the same!

When you smiled you had my undivided attention. When you laughed you had my urge to laugh with you. When you cried you had my urge to hold you. When you said you loved me, you had my heart forever. Anonymous

February is my favorite month! I am an incurable romantic and although my expectations for Valentine’s Day have never been fulfilled, I still hold onto my fantasy that one day they will!

Skipping Stones…

I don’t know if I can do this alone
Oh after all our sweet love is flown
I’ve been a running
I’ve been skipping like a stone
And I don’t know if I
I  can do this all alone.
Amos Lee (Skipping Stone)

I have finally mastered the art of skipping stones. I used to think that the secret lay in the selection of the perfect flat stone (and perhaps the speed the stone is thrown), but I have come to discover that it is the angle of release that matters – the optimal angle that keeps the stone rotating in and out of the water several times before finally sinking below the surface.

It turns out, as well, that the stones do not have to be perfectly flat to be considered good skippers. Combing the beaches and shorelines for the best-shaped stones all these years has been for naught.

It is interesting that a tiny adjustment in technique was all that was required to achieve skipping success, and I wondered if I might apply the same principle to other, more important, areas of my life. It may make all the difference.
