The Flâneur by Joan Currie

In the bustling streets, he roams alone,
In sartorial style all his own.
With aimless steps, he wanders free,
Observing life’s grand tapestry.

He watches lovers hand in hand,
Yet, intimacy he can’t understand.
For behind closed doors, secrets lie,
Hidden from his wandering eye.

He sees the tears, hears goodbyes,
But never truly feels the ties.
To him, the boulevard’s his stage,
Where life unfolds page by page.

Yet, deep within, a longing stirs,
For connection that only he infers.
But in his solitude, he finds solace sweet,
As a flâneur on the city’s street.

I think intimacy is one of the greatest gifts one person can give to another.

Lingering Longer by Joan Currie

Another day awakens, sunlight gently streams,
Yet, I lie entangled in elusive dreams.
Mountains of tasks, a daunting array,
Head heavy with the weight of the pending day.

The dawn whispers of responsibilities vast,
A symphony of to-dos, shadows cast.
Bed’s comfort tempts, a refuge to stay,
But, the world outside demands its sway.

The ache in the head, the burden of thought,
Projects loom, battles to be fought.

In the warmth of the sheets, a plea is said,
To linger longer, and avoid the day ahead.

Ah! If only I could luxuriate in bed for a few more minutes!

Encountering a Lynx by Joan Currie

In the moonlit glade, a lynx appears,
Fur-tipped ears, green-gold eyes quelling fears,
A guardian wise, like an androsphinx’s grace,
Yet, ponder, do we anthropomorphize his face?

All-knowing aura, mystique in his stare,
Yet, does he ponder life with a thoughtful air?
Do we project our musings, a human reflection,
Onto the lynx, seeking a shared connection?

In the silent forests, mysteries untold,
Does the lynx ponder more than hunger bold?
Hissing and yowling and screams in the night,
A startling assertion of nature’s might.

The lynx is my children’s favorite wild cat. :)

By the first dawn of the new year, all the stars shine in the squeegeed sky over the range and the morning is pale blue and golden, and pronghorn run in wet wilted grass. – Anna Badkhen

The pronghorn is the fastest land animal in North America – second fastest in the world next to the African cheetah. The pronghorn’s speed, grace, and agility are my inspiration for moving through the challenges of this coming year.

There is something in the nature of tea that leads us into a world of quiet contemplation of life.
Lin Yutang

Taking a few minutes to have a cup of tea in my favorite teacup. I need to reevaluate my list of resolutions for 2023 since I breached several of them from the get-go on the first day of the new year. Oops! I think my plans were too ambitious and I need to break them down into more manageable, attainable goals – items I can check off my list with relative ease, and engender a sense of accomplishment. So, here goes…

One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas Day.
Don’t clean it up too quickly.
Andy Rooney

When you are finally cleaning up the mess of ribbons and wrapping paper, be sure to save some of the gift tags. I treasure the ones I have collected since I was a child. My mother loved to use the front of beautiful note cards with images of winter such as those by Cornelius Kriegoff, A. J. Casson, and Roy McMurtry. She had beautiful penmanship and always wrote a sweet note to go along with the present. I especially love the gift tags given to me from my daughters – their early attempts at printing “Mommy” and their names are delightful!

Last year my gift tag theme was Christmas trees, but this year I decided to go with birds. I hope one of my children continues my tradition of not only saving the tags but of creating them as well.

Just as the word “science” (scientia) means originally just knowledge and until the eighteenth century covered even theology (which was called the “mother of all sciences”), so natural philosophy (philosophia naturalis), which was also called physica or physiologia, covered the entire domain of the created world, ... 2. The way his hands manipulate things at the bench – his manual dexterity being the most enviable.
  3. The way he insists that the study of science is really the study of natural philosophy – the philosophy of existence.
  4. The way he finds satisfaction in bringing together disparate things and explaining new things to me.
  5. The way he discusses new concepts with his fellow scientists with such passion.
  6. The way he works to make a difference for the good of the world, not motivated by money.
  7. The way he says man cannot negotiate reality: the laws of nature rule in science.
  8. The way he can read labels on consumer packages and understand what is or what is not important.
  9. The way he sees science all around him from baking and cooking in the kitchen to simply looking at tidal pools on a hike.
  10. The way he says, “I don’t know. Let’s find out!” with the same sense of adventure as a small child.
  11. Bonus: The way he looks hot in a pressed white lab coat!

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice
how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.
